SPRING CLEANING

I’m not talking about spring cleaning your house. Don’t, worry you will never see an email from me on that one! I’m talking about spring cleaning your pantry and refrigerator.

This spring is no doubt the season of shedding that COVID 15 lbs. and old habits. Cleansing your cabinets of foods that are not supportive to your health is a good place to begin.  Our environment can powerfully shape our choices.  And it is hard to sustain healthy habits in an environment where there is constant temptation.  I know for me, I cannot keep ice cream in my freezer.  If it is there, I will probably eat it!  So, therefore, I don’t buy it.

So, what to do about it??

Get rid of those foods that do not support your health…

I’m sure I don’t need to share with you some of the obvious examples such as chips, frozen dinners, soda, cookies, that Easter candy, etc… Then you have the tricky foods, those foods that seem rather healthy but are not because they are processed and full of sugar and chemicals.  Examples include: Diet Soda, breakfast cereals, sweetened yogurt, etc... The best thing you can do is check the labels. If I cannot pronounce the ingredients that is a red flag.  If it comes in a box, I hesitate to buy it.  Is it perishable?

Now it is time to restock with healthy options, options that are easy to grab at any moment of the day.  Just as you removed those unhealthy options so they would not be available to you, you must now have healthy options that are available to you. Include healthy fats such as avocado and nuts, lean proteins, your favorite veggies and fruits and whole grains such as quinoa and sprouted grain breads. The last thing you want to do is open the refrigerator at lunchtime, starving with no healthy option to grab. This is a recipe for disaster!

Let me know how I can help you in your journey to spring clean your eating habits!
