WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME?

When is the right time?

When I get back from vacation?

When that work project finishes?

After I have the baby?

When my injury gets better?

Most people think they will succeed if everything is in place and it is the right time—that magical time. Sound familiar?

It probably sounds ridiculous to start new healthy habits in the midst of chaotic times.

But guess what?  It’s never the right time.

There will always be something to impede your progress or provide an obstacle to your progress. And waiting until it’s the right time is a brilliant way to sabotage your plans for better health and fitness.

Whether it’s tomorrow, Monday, next week, or the new year, the work to be done will still be there and will still be tough. You are only procrastinating.

I know this is not what you want to hear but as a coach I will be honest and I do not sugar-coat things.

If we only choose to get in shape when conditions are perfect, what happens when life is not perfect (i.e. most of the time)?

So, this is where a lot of people want to take a little break from fitness. And who can blame them.  But I am curious “What will be different when you return?”

Nothing.

Nothing will be different. In fact, more obstacles but different obstacles will come your way.

Believe me, I have been there. As a single, working, mom I have wanted to take a break from my workouts because life was overwhelming. But how would that make things any better?  Life will continue to be demanding and there will never be a perfect time.  I cannot take a break from work or being a parent so why should it be any different with my health, the thing that makes everything else in my life possible.

When I am overwhelmed by life I try to get some movement in each day.  It may be not be as intense as my regular workouts but it helps me maintain my strength and clarity. It may be a walk to clear my head or 20 minutes of kettlebell swings.

Something is definitely better than nothing!
